Liquid Roof Coatings UK: Polyurethane, GRP, Acrylic Compared (2026)
The 60-second answer: Liquid-applied roof systems are seamless waterproofing solutions painted or rolled onto an existing roof surface. UK 2026 costs: polyurethane liquid roofing £40–£90 per m² for refurbishment-grade coatings; GRP fibreglass laminate £100–£150 per m² fitted (tec
SIX THINGS, EVERY JOB
What you get with Eco Roofers
What we typically see on Greater Manchester roofs
Greater Manchester roof-stock combines dense Victorian terrace (M14/M16/M21 — Rusholme, Whalley Range, Chorlton), inter-war semis through Didsbury and Withington, post-war estates through Wythenshawe and Salford, plus stone-slate cottage stock through the Oldham/Rochdale Pennine fringe.
Local weather notes. Wet-Atlantic weather means moss growth is markedly worse than the East Midlands — valley leaks and lead-flashing failure are more common.
Approved Document L 2022 sets the thermal performance baseline for new roofs (U ≤ 0.16 W/m²K pitched, ≤ 0.18 flat). On flat roofs, BS 6229:2018 sets the design and falls standard. Eco Roofers will guide you through any Building Control notification needed on your job.

Liquid roof types
1. Polyurethane (PU) liquid roofing — single-component or 2-pack systems painted onto a primed substrate. £40–£90/m² depending on number of coats. Lifespan 15–20 years. Best for: refurbishment of an aged but sound roof; complex shapes where membrane sheets won’t fit cleanly.
2. GRP fibreglass — chopped-strand-mat fibreglass laminated with catalysed polyester resin into a hard seamless finish. £100–£150/m² fitted. Lifespan 25–30 years. See GRP Fibreglass Roof for the full guide.
3. Acrylic coatings — paint-on water-based systems for short-term refresh. £25–£50/m². Lifespan 8–12 years. Lower-tier option for budget-constrained homeowners or short-term let situations.
When liquid roofing is the right answer
- Complex roof shape with multiple penetrations, awkward angles, or curved sections where membrane sheets need extensive cutting and detailing
- Refurbishment of a sound existing roof that needs waterproofing refresh, not full replacement (typically a roof at 60-70% of useful life with no structural problems)
- Heritage / listed-building where membrane changes aren’t allowed but the existing surface needs renewal
- Maintenance contract roofs where 8-12 year refresh cycles fit operational budgets
When liquid roofing is the WRONG answer
- Fundamentally-failed roof — liquid coatings can’t fix structural problems, deck rot, or major substrate failures. Painting over a dying roof = throwing money at the symptom.
- Cold-roof condensation problems — liquid coatings don’t change the U-value or address moisture migration. Address the cause with warm-roof retrofit instead.
- Roofs already at end-of-life — better to replace than refresh
- Heavy foot traffic applications — liquid coatings don’t tolerate it; use GRP instead
Eco Roofers liquid roof work
We fit liquid systems where they’re the right answer — typical scenarios: complex commercial roofs with many penetrations, heritage refurbishments, mid-life roof refreshes where the underlying structure is sound. For most domestic flat-roof refurbishments we recommend EPDM or GRP instead — better lifespan-to-cost ratio for the typical Notts/South Yorks job. Phone for an honest assessment of which system fits your specific roof.
FAQ
How long does liquid roof coating last?
Polyurethane 15-20 years; GRP 25-30 years; acrylic 8-12 years. Lifespan depends on substrate condition and quality of preparation.
Can I apply liquid roof coating myself?
DIY-friendly polyurethane systems exist but professional install gives better warranty and longer lifespan. Substrate prep is the critical step that DIY commonly gets wrong.
Is liquid roof better than EPDM?
Different use cases. EPDM wins for simple flat roofs (cheaper, longer lifespan). Liquid wins for complex shapes, heritage refurbishments, or sound roofs needing waterproofing refresh.
Can liquid roof fix a leak?
Localised liquid patch can fix small splits or pinholes on a sound roof. Not recommended for major leak diagnosis — usually a sign the roof needs replacement, not coating.
