What you get with Eco Roofers
What we typically see on South Yorkshire roofs
South Yorkshire’s roof-stock skews heavier on terrace and ex-mining-village stock — Cudworth, Royston, Wombwell (Barnsley), Rawmarsh, Wath-upon-Dearne (Rotherham/Doncaster fringe), Stocksbridge, Deepcar (Sheffield S35/S36). Sheffield itself has the most-varied stock in the region — Victorian terrace (S2, S6, S7), 1930s semis (S10, S11, S17), and post-war estates.
Local weather notes. Pennine weather pattern: stronger south-westerly winds, more wind-driven rain on west-facing elevations. Stone slate is more common than further south, particularly in Sheffield’s higher villages.
Approved Document L 2022 sets the thermal performance baseline for new roofs (U ≤ 0.16 W/m²K pitched, ≤ 0.18 flat). On flat roofs, BS 6229:2018 sets the design and falls standard. Eco Roofers will guide you through any Building Control notification needed on your job.

What counts as a roofing emergency
Five scenarios where you need a roofer today, not next week:
1. Active water entering the property
A leak that’s actively dripping into a room — water damage to ceilings, electrics, furniture, possessions. Every hour the leak continues, the damage compounds. Rule of thumb: containment within 4 hours stops most secondary damage; beyond 12 hours you’re into ceiling-replacement territory.
What to do before we arrive: put buckets under drips, move furniture and electronics, turn off any light fittings or electrics in the affected ceiling area at the consumer unit. If water is pouring through a light fitting, switch off the relevant lighting circuit immediately.
2. Storm damage — visible from the ground
After a UK winter storm, the most common visible damage is:
- Missing or slipped tiles/slates especially on the windward elevation
- Lifted or stripped sections of flat-roof membrane
- Damaged or fallen chimney pots / stacks
- Bent, twisted, or broken ridge tiles
- Hanging or flapping flashings
Anything visible from the ground is a job for a roofer; anything you can only see from a ladder is a job for a roofer too — please don’t go up on the roof yourself.
3. Partial roof collapse or structural failure
Sagging deck, visibly compromised joists, a section of roof that’s bowed, dropped, or dipped. Don’t enter the room beneath. Ring us on 07929 379 746 — we’ll come out today and assess. Make-safe may involve scaffolding, props, or evacuating the affected area until structural engineering is involved.
4. Chimney instability
Cracks in the brickwork above the roof line, lean, missing pots, or visibly damaged flashings after a storm. Chimney falls cause significant property damage and are a safety risk to anyone below. Make-safe response: tarp the stack, secure or remove damaged sections, agree the rebuild scope in writing.
5. Visible roof exposure
After significant storm damage, the felt or membrane may have stripped completely, leaving the deck exposed to weather. Damp gets into the structure within hours. Tarp-and-batten the area to stop further water entry, then schedule full repair within 1–2 weeks.
What an emergency callout looks like with Eco Roofers
Step 1 (minutes after your call): Sean calls back. Quick triage by phone — what’s happened, what’s the address, what’s the access situation, any safety concerns. We confirm same-day arrival window.
Step 2 (today, weather-dependent): Site arrival typically within 4–8 hours of the call across our 9-town service area. Faster for repeat customers and for Mansfield/Worksop/Hucknall (closest to base).
Step 3 (on site): Make-safe work — tarp, batten, board, tape, temporary cap as needed. Photo documentation of damage. Verbal estimate of permanent-repair scope.
Step 4 (within 24-48 hours): Written fixed-price quote for permanent repair, by email. You decide whether to go ahead.
Step 5 (scheduled date): Permanent repair work, typically within 1–3 weeks of the make-safe.

What to do BEFORE we arrive
Quick checklist while you wait for the callout:
- Move people and pets out of the affected room if water is entering
- Turn off the affected lighting circuit at the consumer unit if water is anywhere near a light fitting
- Move furniture and electronics to safer rooms
- Place buckets under active drips
- Photograph the damage from inside (helps with insurance claim later)
- Photograph the damage from outside (ground level only — please don’t go up on the roof)
- Don’t go on the roof in any weather, ever, without proper safety equipment and training
- Don’t use a ladder to investigate from above in wet/windy conditions
Insurance claim help
We provide a detailed written report with photos for every emergency callout, suitable for submission to home insurance. Most UK home policies cover storm damage and accidental damage; many exclude gradual deterioration (which is why getting the make-safe done same-day matters — it documents that the damage was acute, not progressive).
If you need help with the claim:
- We can liaise directly with your insurance loss adjuster
- We can quote on a “specified work scope” basis the adjuster accepts
- We don’t take a cut from insurance work — fixed-price quote either way
When emergency repair becomes a planned replacement
If the storm damage is the final straw on a roof that was already at end-of-life (12+ year-old felt, multiple existing leaks, deck rot), the make-safe holds the property weather-tight while we plan a full strip-and-replace. Replacement takes 1–3 weeks to schedule and 1–3 days to execute on a typical extension.
See our flat roof replacement guide and warm roof retrofit guide for what permanent replacement looks like.

FAQ
Do you do same-day callouts?
Yes — phone Sean direct on 07929 379 746 by 2pm and we’ll be on site the same day across our 9-town service area, weather permitting. After 2pm calls usually next morning.
What’s the cost of an emergency callout?
£180–£600 for make-safe work depending on what’s needed. Out-of-hours supplement £100–£200. Permanent repair quoted separately within 24–48 hours.
Will my insurance cover this?
Most UK home insurance policies cover storm damage and accidental damage. We provide a detailed written report with photos suitable for submission. We can liaise with loss adjusters directly if needed. Check your policy excess.
What if you can’t fix it on the day?
Make-safe holds the property weather-tight (tarp, batten, temporary patches) until permanent repair work can be scheduled. Make-safe typically lasts 2–6 weeks comfortably; longer with periodic re-tarp.
Do you do night callouts?
For genuine safety emergencies (active structural collapse, immediate danger), yes — though only via direct phone to Sean on 07929 379 746. For overnight active leaks where there’s no immediate safety risk, we usually advise containment overnight (buckets, switched-off circuits) and same-day arrival the next morning.
Will you go on a roof in a storm?
No — never. Roof work in active storms is a serious safety risk. We’ll come out, assess from ground level, agree the right time to do the work safely, and tarp from a window or scaffold platform if urgent containment is needed.
